Following post-graduate work on atomic-level imaging of semiconductors, Rod Smallwood moved into medical engineering, where he worked on a series of problems whose only common denominator was their clinical relevance - why did spinal injuries patients die from kidney failure? How could the morbidity and mortality of carotid angiograms be reduced? Could the control of intestinal motility be non-invasively assessed? Could screening techniques for epithelial cancers be improved? He eventually managed to escape several years as a Head of Department by moving to Computer Science and starting a new research programme on cellular interaction, with the aim of understanding how individual cells collaborate to produce properly structured and functional tissue, and how malignant cells subvert the system to their own ends. The talk will have an exponentially-mapped-past weighting, and will therefore be mainly about cellular interaction and the role of systems thinking in systems biology.

Following the presentation, Devdatt Dubashi and Anders Eriksson of Chalmers will comment on the field of computational biology at Chalmers.

Sandip Kundu gives a seminar at Linköping University (Alan Turing) on Oct 1 at 10:15.

Design for Manufacturability (DFM) is a design approach that simultaneously considers all of the design goals such as functionality, area, power and performance as well as constraints such as optical patterning limitations including diffraction and etches. Manufacturing yield can be improved through design process. Incorporating design practices to improve manufacturing yield has gained recent attention. In this talk, we will explore photolithography trends and how they restrict designs and describe the process of yield improvement through better physical design as well as yield recovery through test oriented learning process.

Sandip Kundu is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Previously he was at Intel Corporation (till January 2005). Prior to joining Intel, he was a member of the research staff at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Laboratory (1988-1997). Registration: notify your attendance by sending an email to: lina.bertling@ee.kth.se Modelling Equipment Maintenance with Application to Non-Stationary Repair and Preventive Maintenace Processes by Associated Professor Joel Nachlas at Virginia Tech University at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Dr. Nachlas is faculty advisor at the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS. Abstract: The economic viability of repairable equipment hinges on the implementation of effective and efficient maintenance strategies. While the significance of maintenance has been recognized for a long time, realistic mathematical models for analyzing and selecting maintenance strategies have been relatively slow in their evolution. This is largely a consequence of the complexity of the real systems and advances in maintenance concepts. The set of repairable equipment that can and should be managed using efficient maintenance strategies is extensive. Public transport vehicles such as aircraft, buses, taxis and trains are routinely subjected to maintenance analysis. The maintenance of manufacturing equipment power production plants and public infrastructure such as power distribution and road and water networks are also studied carefully. Historical models of repair processes are based on the assumption of time homogeneity and are often represented as renewal processes. Those models are described briefly in order to define a structure for maintenance analysis. The complexity of maintenance modelling is explained in terms of a transition from instantaneous repair models to availability formulations and finally to models of both repair and preventive maintenance actions. Some recent advances in the application of probability models to non-stationary processes that are more representative of real systems are described. The numerical challenges that arise in evaluating these models are illustrated and opportunities for further analyses are discussed. About the speaker: Joel Nachlas is Associate Professor at Virginia Tech University at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and is faculty advisor at the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). INFORMS is the largest professional society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research (O.R.). His research interests are in Reliability and Quality and Control, and he is a well know teacher in Operations Research. Prof. Nachlas has written several books and numerous of papers. He is a main editor for the Annual Reliability & Maintainability Symposium (RAMS).

The addition of new power system facilities, including large power plants and high-voltage transmission lines, is becoming more difficult as economic and environmental constraints increase. Factors resulting from utility deregulation, including transmission open access and energy from independent power producers and legislation affecting air quality and electromagnetic effects, are combining to cause existing equipment to work harder and longer and under conditions that were not involved in its original design or its protection. As producers and users of electrical energy, you need to understand how present mechanical and microprocessor-based relaying systems function, how they communicate, how their performance can be analyzed, and what is on the horizon to meet new challenges.

This CANCELLED workshop was to focus on how the altered age distribution in the industrialized world affects professional working life. The key observations behind the workshop are that the average life span beyond commonly accepted retirement age keeps increasing, and that many who approach retirement age might consider extending their working life for a few years if circumstances allowed and encouraged it. Thus, their experience and know-how could be put to good use for a longer time, for the mutual economic benefit of themselves and their employers. However, current economic and workplace conditions may not be suitable for such an arrangement.  Read more

In recent years, advances in miniaturization, low-power circuit design, simple, low power, yet reasonably efficient wireless communication equipment, and improved small-scale energy supplies have combined with reduced manufacturing costs to make a new technological vision possible: Wireless sensor networks. A sensor network is composed of a large number of sensor nodes, which are densely deployed either inside the phenomenon or very close to it. The position of nodes need not be engineered or pre-determined. This allows random deployment in inaccessible terrains or disaster relief operation. We will present an overview of advances in wireless sensor networks technology and its future trends and its applications. Read more

Ultra-Wide Bandwidth, Thin Film Electro-Optic Modulators for Microphotonics. Lecture by Prof. Bruce Wessels.
Thin film electro-optic (EO) modulators for optical communications and electro-optic systems are being developed. The modulators use ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin films as the active waveguide material. Epitaxial BaTiO3 is deposited by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Strip-loaded modulators with electro-optic coefficients as high as 430 pm/V have been demonstrated, which is 13 times higher than that of LiNbO3, the currently preferred material for wide bandwidth applications. We have demonstrated modulation out to 40 GHz. Furthermore using this thin film technology potentially enables modulation out to 100 GHz and beyond. The thin film electro-optic devices can be integrated using a silicon platform. Other advantages include small footprint, low operating voltage and operation over the spectral range of 0.4 to 7 microns. Read more
